Gaining Insight on a Critical Public Health Challenge

Peer Link students participated in the Helios Alliance Opioid Abatement Summit, an experience that deepened their understanding of one of the most pressing public health challenges facing communities nationwide. The summit brought together leaders, practitioners, and advocates working to reduce the impact of opioid misuse through education, prevention, and intervention. Throughout the day, students learned from a diverse group of speakers who shared both professional expertise and lived experience. National and local perspectives helped frame the scope of the opioid crisis, emphasizing the importance of coordinated, community-based responses that address prevention, treatment, and recovery.A meaningful moment for students was hearing from Peer Link Program Director Tempey Hamilton, whose remarks highlighted the critical role young people play in supporting their peers. Her presence reinforced the importance of equipping students with the knowledge, confidence, and tools needed to create safer, more informed school environments.
